Textile Memory Place explores the capacity and limits of textile as a vessel for memory.

The woven structure of fabric imitates the appearance of time - infinite intersecting timelines disrupted and redirected by the intervention of the thread of consciousness embodied by the human form.

These figures, made of one continuous line of thread, intersect the woven textile mirroring the memory’s intervention into the predictable patterns of perceived reality.

Referencing Charles S. Sherrington’s concept of The Enchanted Loom, Textile Memory Place takes this metaphor one step further. Extending from the imagining of the brain upon its emergence from the dream state, this illustration of an infinite tapestry is conceived in this series to apply to our collective reality and the metaphysical intervention of this structure by our existence.

Conceptualizing time and our collective memory as a fabric in this way breaks the linear structure and makes visible the movements of expression from our history. The works of this series make reference to notable works of art, specifically focusing on the perspective of the female body and existence, changing the narrative of the male gaze to one of a woman’s own self-perception, identity and personal intimacy.

This series explores the use of natural elemental pigments and traditional oil paint making processes to compliment the definitive textile figuration.
